Training Camp Notes 8/10/09

·         The Broncos and rookie RB Knowshon Moreno have agreed on a 5-year, $23 million deal. The team has off today, so Knowshon's 1st camp day will have to wait until tomorrow. He officially missed 12 practices. The 12th overall pick will start camp 3rd on the depth chart behind Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan. But it shouldn't take him long to shoot up the depth chart. HC Josh McDaniel's is taking a wait-and-see approach. "Whatever he does with his opportunities he has once he gets here, that will tell us where to play him and how much to play him," McDaniels said. We still expect Moreno to be in the backfield on the Broncos' 1st offensive snap of the season. We're sticking with our optimistic projections for him.

·         Cowboys beat writer Tim MacMahon confirmed that the team will line up RB Felix Jones all over the field this season. "The offensive staff spent a lot of time brainstorming ways to take advantage of his explosiveness and elusiveness in the open field," MacMahon writes. He did, however, mention that the Cowboys have not been splitting him out wide during camp. Jones will see traditional hand-offs, screen passes, dump-offs, and snaps from the Wildcat.

·         Falcons WR Roddy White has agreed to a 6-year, $50 million contract. He'll receive over $18 million guaranteed. The deal makes him the NFL's 2nd highest paid WR, behind only Larry Fitzgerald. White's holdout only lasted a week, so his fantasy value wasn't affected. He remains a solid WR1.

·         QB Mark Sanchez took 1st-team reps at Jets practice yesterday, but HC Rex Ryan later announced that QB Kellen Clemens would start the team's preseason opener. Sanchez has been out-playing Clemens for the past week, so this is likely a make-or-break start for Clemens. If he doesn't play really well against the Rams this Friday, Sanchez will have the job on lock-down.

·         Eagles WR DeSean Jackson hyper-extended his right knee during today's practice. He walked off the field under his own power and said "I'm alright. No problems" as he left the facility. It doesn't seem serious, but we'll keep our eye on the situation. Rookie WR Jeremy Maclin could get some 1st-team reps in the meantime.

·         We've been banking on a big workload for 49ers RB Frank Gore this season. But OC Jimmy Raye may have something else in mind. "I see [Gore and rookie RB Glen Coffee] in tandem, working together," Raye said. "I think it is very difficult for one guy to go 16, 18, 20 weeks and carry the load." We wouldn't put too much stock in this. Coffee will only spell Gore sparingly. Gore is still a good bet for well over 300 touches

·         WR Earl Bennett continues to impress everyone at camp. Bears beat writer Brad Biggs notes that he's caught ;everything that has come his way" and ;looks completely different than he did a year ago." Bennett will have every opportunity to breakout in his sophomore season as the team's #2 WR. He's one of our favorite late-round WRs.

·         It may be Colts TE Dallas Clark, not WR Anthony Gonzalez, who picks up the slack left by WR Marvin Harrison's departure. ESPN's Chris Mortensen described QB Peyton Manning's chemistry with Clark ;outright scary." It's tough to see Clark catching more than the 77 passes he hauled in last season, but his targets will almost certainly increase this year.
