Mock Market Report 12 team draft recap

Geoffrey Stein

Hindsight vision is perfect, once again

The 12-team draft included starting rosters of one QB, TE, K, team defense and Flex (RB, WR or TE), two RBs and three WRs. Ten bench players were also selected.

Scoring included a point-per-reception (PPR), four points for a passing TD, six points for all other scores, one point for every 10 rushing and receiving yards and one point for every 20 passing yards.

Here is the team that I drafted out of the No. 7 spot....

Round 1, Pick 7: RB Steve Slaton, Texans -- I'm really warming up to this guy as one of the safest picks at the end of the first-round. Forget Chris Brown's preseason performance, Slaton is the man in Houston in all aspects of the game.

Round 2, Pick 6: RB Brian Westbrook, Eagles -- An absolute steal with the 18th overall pick in a PPR league.

Round 3, Pick 7: RB Reggie Bush, Saints -- Thought about a WR here, but couldn't pass up a starting lineup featuring Slaton, Westbrook and Bush. It's fair to project 200 catches from my RB trio.

Round 4, Pick 6: QB Aaron Rodgers, Packers -- I needed a No. 1 WR, no doubt, but the middle of the fourth-round is a dead zone at the position. With three RBs in the fold and my waiting on TEs philosophy in full effect, I decided to select my highest-rated remaining QB, Rodgers.

Round 5, Pick 7: WR Chad Ochocinco, Bengals -- Not the ideal top receiver, but there's no denying Ochocinco's upside. Eighty-plus catches and eight TDs isn't a stretch by any means.

Round 6, Pick 6: WR Santonio Holmes, Steelers -- Had to stock up at WR, so I grabbed Holmes who I like better as a No. 3. Pittsburgh remains a running team, so I doubt that Holmes will far outperform his 2008 catch total of 55.

Round 7, Pick 7: RB Felix Jones, Cowboys -- Hard for me to pass this guy up in the seventh-round of a PPR league. I'm expecting big things in 2009.

Round 8, Pick 6: WR Jerricho Cotchery, Jets -- Kinda', sorta', kinda' like this pick. Cotchery has the potential to produce 80-plus catches, which would make him a solid No. 2 receiver and bump Holmes down to No. 3. I could live with that.

Round 9, Pick 7: RB Willis McGahee, Ravens -- A fifth RB probably wasn't what I needed here, but I liked the value McGahee provided at the end of the ninth-round.

Round 10, Pick 6: TE Dustin Keller, Jets -- Two Jets pass-catchers in my starting lineup probably isn't the best of ideas with a rookie QB under center in Gotham. I love Keller's upside, which made it too hard to pass him up.

Round 11, Pick 7: RB Jamaal Charles, Chiefs -- Wasn't much of a fan of Charles early on, but he's starting to grow on me. Really think that he could do some damage in both the running and passing game.

Round 12, Pick 6: QB Trent Edwards, Bills -- In my opinion, Edwards' is the perfect No. 2 QB.

Round 13, Pick 7: WR Earl Bennett, Bears -- Like the relationship Bennett has with QB Jay Cutler, but think I'm really in trouble with him as my fourth WR.

Round 14, Pick 6: TE Vernon Davis, 49ers -- The Keller/Davis law firm lands on my roster once again. The duo should be good for at least one start each week.

Round 15, Pick 7: RB Jerious Norwood, Falcons -- Should get more touches this year as the Falcons look to keep Michael Turner fresh. Norwood catches the ball well out of the backfield which gives him some value in PPR leagues.

Round 16, Pick 6: WR Sidney Rice, Vikings -- Like Rice more with Brett Favre in the fold. His size and speed combination should get him plenty of downfield looks.

Round 17, Pick 7: K Ryan Longwell, Vikings -- One of the dangers of drafting at 2 pm on a Friday: I'm trying to get a million things done so I can get home before the sun goes down. I was on the phone here, and missed my pick.

Round 18, Pick 6: DEF Washington Redskins -- Eh, not so bad. Thanks, computer.

Round 19, Pick 7: K Jeff Reed, Steelers -- Damn you, computer!

Round 20, Pick 6: QB Sage Rosenfels, Vikings -- I got back in time to make this selection. Looking back, I probably should've let the computer make this pick, too.

Even without the auto-draft picks late, I'm not a huge fan of how this team turned out.

My receiving corps is far from ideal which leads my hindsight analysis to conclude that I should've grabbed a WR in Round 1.

Larry Fitzgerald was gone by the time my pick rolled around, but pairing Randy Moss or Andre Johnson with Westbrook and Bush would've been a heck of a start.

The only good part of this draft: I didn't draft a second defense.
